Lost Your Car Keys? A Step-by-Step Plan
Before you call anyone, confirm the key is genuinely gone. Retrace the last three places you had it, and check coat pockets, gym bags and the trunk latch area — keys lock themselves in the trunk more often than people expect.
Next, gather the details a locksmith needs: year, make, model, VIN (visible at the base of the windshield) and whether any working key still exists. All-keys-lost jobs take longer and cost more because the key must be originated from the vehicle's code rather than duplicated.
Have proof of ownership ready — registration, insurance card or title matched to your photo ID. Any reputable automotive locksmith will insist on it, and the check protects your vehicle.
Finally, if the lost key was a smart fob, ask to have it deleted from the vehicle's memory. Otherwise whoever finds it can still unlock your doors.
